Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script

Before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set, someone has already chosen which story is worth the risk. A book often sits at the start of the process when you follow a few hits backward. ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance revolving around a secret child, is based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, comes from a novel by Cora Reilly. Korea’s 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, carrying a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. Several app vertical drama all episodes owners also run reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio builds the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Without a book, writers lean on proven tropes such as revenge, billionaire romance, identity reveals and family drama. Every scene has to deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to condense a long drama story into scenes like that.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

It is in casting that the format’s economics become visible on screen. Scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb and the same names keep appearing. Noah Fearnley returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star, after fronting ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024. In 2025, Rosa Singerman led two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. A lead with a following on one app arrives at the next title with a head start, which counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Studios also cast with a specific viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. A production team in Los Angeles belongs to DramaBox.

Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

A Western short drama generally costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days, according to TheWrap. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is pegged at $150,000 to $250,000. When a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic works out to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Leaner numbers still have been reported by Chinese producers selling abroad, with Jiuzhou Culture placing a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That equals roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets, Jiuzhou also said, about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. Since dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Trimming to 60–100 Seconds

In the editing room, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are cut from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. An episode that short has room for a turn or two of plot, so each episode is structured around a question that the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. A 70-episode series amounts to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time when those slivers are put together. Episode counts vary a great deal by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Viewers who never open the app can still catch the same footage, because ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Editors are, in other words, shaping video dramas for several screens at the same time.

Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Lands

The final creative decision is also a commercial one. TheWrap outlines a standard model where the first eight to ten episodes are free. ReelShort’s own blog says its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, while TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes are unlocked with coins, and ReelShort’s blog gives the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Prices differ by country, platform and promotion, so your store may list something different. Placement is where the controversy lies: among the most common complaints about these apps are paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series

In the newest production stage, there is no camera at all. ReelShort now carries animated motion comics that run alongside its live-action catalogue. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. It should not be mixed up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which means the app has gone the furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

Traditional studios have taken notice, most visibly Fox Entertainment. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, received an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside, and Fox has also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. When a network-scale producer signs up to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line in Brief

Setting the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is built around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. Scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting leans toward known faces, and the edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below summarizes typical time and cost at each stage, using only publicly reported figures. When no reliable number has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.

Production stage Usual time / cost What takes place
Script and source material No published figure A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No public number Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step
The shoot 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are shot in a vertical frame
Editing Episodes of 60–100 seconds Footage is cut into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
